Flying to the South Island

We departed Rotorua on an Air New Zealand domestic flight to Christchurch.

After a change of planes, we arrived in Queenstown a small town in a very picturesque area of the South Island.

Before going to our hotel, our bus took us to a viewing area where we can see the town and the water.

Our leaders posed for pictures.

The terrain around Queenstown is really rugged.  We'll see a lot more of this before we leave.

It's not often that the photographer ends up in a picture, but a kind All Classical/Earthbound traveler offered to take this one.

Our hotel was right on the waterfront.  The steam boat in the second photo is the Earnslaw, a 100-year-old (built 1912) excursion boat.  It still runs, taking passengers across the lake and back.

It took all day to get here from Rotorua, and all of us ended the day with a bit of down time. Tomorrow, we explore Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park.  It's called that because it's filled with glacier-formed fiords, just as in Norway.
